YOGA: union; joining; a science or systematic approach to join together one's body, mind and spirit (heart).
Traditionally yoga includes 8 limbs or areas of practice to strengthen the whole self. In the West we emphasize the practice of yoga postures(asana), yogic breathing (pranayama) and concentration/meditation (dharana).
The practice of postures helps us to strengthen, stretch and align our bodies, allowing tension to release and life force energy (prana) to flow. The practice of yogic breathing calms the mind. This in turn prepares us for meditation. The combination of movement and breath generates clarity and confidence. It creates space for us to reconnect with our self, our heart's desire. Yoga is experiential. The benefits are felt through the practice.

Swami Kripalu (1913-1981), a yoga master and link between ancient India and contemporary Western society, known for the intensity of his spiritual practice and depth of his compassion said: "To read uplifting books or listen to spiritual discourses is good. But to practice even a little is of the utmost importance. The profound meaning of yoga is only understood by those who study it systematically through personal practice. The day you start to practice, your true progress will begin."
Yoga strengthens our awareness. Yoga sheds light on what is true for us moment to moment. Through practice we learn to honor what we discover and to respond with compassion.
